Throughout the world there are numerous humanitarian organizations that work to help others lead better lives. They focus on everything from disaster relief to ending world hunger. Read on to learn more about five of the most important global humanitarian organizations.

World Food Programme (WFP)

Every year the WFP helps feed 90 million people in 80 different countries. In 2012 alone, the organization provided half of the food aid delivered throughout the globe. The organization doesn’t just provide food to hungry people. It also works to provide vulnerable communities with the tools to solve the issues that cause hunger in the first place. With the help of academic institutions, WFP uses technology to monitor signs that point to a food crisis. This helps them respond quicker and more effectively. You can assist WFP by making a donation on their site.

Cooperative for Assistance and Relief Everywhere (CARE)

CARE fights global poverty. Like WFP, the organization seeks to give communities the tools to become self-sufficient. The organization is especially focused on empowering women and girls “because women produce half the world’s food, put in two-thirds of the world’s working hours, and yet make only 10 percent of the world’s income” (Why Women & Girls?). CARE doesn’t just build a school in a community; it makes sure that girls always have access to education as well. Learn how you can help.

Oxfam International

Oxfam is comprised of 18 different organizations that work to end poverty and other injustices. The organization’s mission is to “create lasting solutions to poverty, hunger, and social injustice” (Inside Oxfam America). Oxfam works to find the root causes of poverty and then eliminate them. The organization accomplishes its goals by working to change the laws that keep people in poverty as well as educating the public about poverty and what causes it. There are many ways that you can help Oxfam end poverty. Visit their site for more information.

International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC)

IFRC is the largest network of humanitarian aid in the world. The organization’s vision is “to inspire, encourage, facilitate and promote at all times all forms of humanitarian activities by National Societies, with a view to preventing and alleviating human suffering, and thereby contributing to the maintenance and promotion of human dignity and peace in the world” (Our Vision and Mission). IFRC focuses on providing assistance to people in disaster areas as well as promoting peace. The organization also has numerous programs that deal with global issues like climate change and urbanization. If you want to get involved, you can learn more here.

Action Against Hunger (AAH)

AAH works to end world hunger. The organization is especially focused on helping malnourished children. One of AAH’s programs focuses on providing access to water. During emergencies, the organization provides water to affected communities. It also works to educate communities on how they can best manage their water and sanitation.
